Coconut Creme out to maintain good record of three-year-olds

Newmarket trainers hold a particularly strong hand, with William Haggas’s Coconut Creme of particular interest now she takes a considerable drop in class.

Runner-up to the talented Mori in a Goodwood Listed event two outings ago, she was by no means disgraced behind Coronet in the Group 2 Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot last time out.

Candy always one to respect in this race

Henry Candy has an excellent recent record in this race, winning it with Lady Pimpernel (2014) and Chain Of Daisies (2016). His representative this time, Uele River, is likely to be one of the outsiders but that didn’t stop Lady Pimpernel, who scored at 20-1.

Stoute’s record is also impressive

Sir Michael Stoute, who saddles one of the likelier types in Playful Sound, is bidding to land the Listed prize for the fourth time in 11 years. Promising Lead (2007), Ave (2009) and Mango Diva (2013) were his previous winners and Playful Sound, who made a winning debut as a three-year-old over course and distance last June, seems sure to prove popular with punters.

Three-year-olds have a good record

Six of the last ten renewals have been won by three-year-olds. There are four candidates from that age group this year, namely Billesdon Bess, Coconut Creme, Indian Blessing and Serenada, all of whom receive a valuable 7lb weight-for-age allowance.

We’ve given her a break since the Ribblesdale at Ascot. We felt 1m4f was plenty far enough for her at this stage of her career and that’s why we’ve gone back in trip. She’s in good form.

She ran well in a muddling sort of race in France last time. She is versatile in terms of ground and her form is pretty solid. I’ve always felt she’s a stakes filly and I'm hoping for a big run.

Roger Varian, trainer of Serenada
She was Group 3-placed over this trip in the Musidora Stakes, so we wanted to run her again over ten furlongs. That piece of form is right up there with the best on offer in this race on official ratings and I'm looking forward to running her. She's in good form.
