All you need to know as Pollyanna and Signora clash again in Cheveley Park

There has been plenty of talk about this year’s crop of two-year-olds being something special, and Pretty Pollyanna and Signora Cabello served up one of the most memorable clashes of 2018 in the Group 1 Prix Morny last month.

The two fillies were in a league of their own as they left the colts trailing and went head-to-head in a bruising battle through the final furlong, swapping leads as they gave their all in pursuit of victory.

On that day in Deauville it was Pretty Pollyanna who came out on top, backing up her emphatic seven-length success in the Duchess of Cambridge Stakes and solidifying her position as a best-priced 10-1 favourite for the Qipco 1,000 Guineas.

She heads the betting for a deep Juddmonte Cheveley Park Stakes too, where she takes on a high-class field of ten fillies.

Michael Bell is full of confidence about his filly and said: “It’s a strong race but she deserves to be favourite. She’s training extremely well and I’m very happy with her work. She has a really good skin on her still and she’s in really good shape.

“Signora Cabello made a real good fight of it in France, so she warrants the utmost respect and it a worthy adversary. Then there’s the Lowther first and second, the Moyglare second plus plenty of other talented fillies with good form.”

He added: “Her win in the Duchess of Cambridge was visually extremely impressive and she showed different qualities in the Prix Morny. She’s shown flair in one race and tenacity in another.”

Signora Cabello enhanced her reputation in game victories in the Queen Mary Stakes and the Prix Robert Papin but came off second best in the Prix Morny.

Her trainer John Quinn has no doubt Signora Cabello is the best filly he has ever had his hands on, and is expecting another bold performance approaching Saturday’s contest.

“It was a fantastic run and a wonderful sight to see those two fillies duelling and pulling clear,” he said. “They put a lot of daylight back to the third and the winner was just better on the day.

“Her recent work has been good so I'm expecting a big run from her. I'm sure she'll run well. It's a different day and a different track. I'm very happy with her.”

So Perfect leads O'Brien trio in bid for hat-trick

So Perfect brings Group 1 form to the table as part of a three-strong Ballydoyle challenge for this race, in which trainer Aidan O'Brien will be bidding for a hat-trick following the victories of Brave Anna (2016) and Clemmie (2017).

Seamie Heffernan's mount ran Advertise to half a length in the Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh last month having previously landed a Group 3 in which she beat Skitter Scatter, a subsequent winner at Group 1 level.

"Her run in the Phoenix Stakes was a very good one and the form of her Group 3 win has worked out well,” O’Brien said. “We've been happy with her since her last run and she's in good form.”

Donnacha O'Brien teams up with Lowther Stakes winner Fairyland for the first time. Her trainer said: "She was coming back from a two month break when she ran at York and we think she has come forward since."

Completing the Ballydoyle trio is Gossamer Wings, the mount of Wayne Lordan. She has shown her best form over 5f, being touched off in the Queen Mary Stakes by Signora Cabello and finishing third in the Flying Childers Stakes at Doncaster on her most recent start.

O'Brien said: "We're trying blinkers as when she gets there in her races she's not inclined to do much. Hopefully, they will help her.”

Lavery seeks fairytale success with Lady Kaya

Sheila Lavery has yet to train a Group winner and she is hoping Lady Kaya might put her name in lights by providing a fairytale result at Newmarket.

Lady Kaya, who carries the colours of Lavery's 25-year-old niece, Joanne, brings Group 1 form into the race following her second-place finish in the Moyglare at the Curragh when beaten two lengths by Skitter Scatter.

Robbie Colgan, better known as a jump jockey, is a neighbour of the trainer and has struck up a successful association with her. He has ridden Lady Kaya in all her races, including a ten-length maiden win at the Curragh last month.

Lady Kaya reverts to 6f for the first time since finishing third on her debut and Lavery believes dropping down in trip will suit the daughter of Dandy Man.

She said: "Lady Kaya travels very well in her races and while I expect seven furlongs or a mile will suit her next year when she has strengthened up, six should be ideal for her at this stage."

She's done nothing wrong in winning her Group 3 at Ascot and running well in other nice races and deserves to take her chance. We are perfectly aware of the quality of the opposition but she goes there in top order.

She's done nothing but improve so hopefully she'll run well again. I don't understand the price difference between her and Fairyland - wherever she finishes we should be right by her. I can't see the ground being a problem either.
