It stands to reason that the Becher Chase's fortunes should tie in closely with those of its older cousin, the Grand National. Where that might not have been so readily predicted is in the trend towards higher-quality runners.

Comply Or Die, winner of the 2008 Grand National, would have got nowhere near a run by the time of the 2019 running. Similarly, the number of runners in the Becher rated 150 or higher by the BHA has crept up. Starting in 2008, the trend goes 201214023454. If all 15 declared runners in 2020 face the starter this time, you would be able to put a six on the end.
