For just about the first time this autumn, today jump racing is totally dominant across the afternoon diet. Ludlow, Carlisle and Southwell combine to provide the action, with Thurles also giving Irish fans an extra helping of the winter game.

The historical highlight might be Carlisle's beginners' chase (3.20), which last year was won by Cloudy Dream and also has names like Duke Of Navan, Pendra and Bury Parade on its recent roll of honour. No obvious future stars are in the five-strong line-up this year, but three of them were useful hurdlers with the potential to be better chasers.

Flat fans will get their fix, but will have to wait until Chelmsford's seven-race card begins in the evening.

Final thought

Talk of Cracksman versus Enable next year will no doubt permeate through the winter, but what would be the most suitable set of circumstances for them to meet? With Enable unlikely to have any trouble with a stiff 1m2f, the Eclipse would be at least as fun to watch as the King George.
