Able Jack bids to translate all-weather form to turf

Able Jack is arguably the most intriguing runner of the nine-strong field as he bids to translate his improvement from the all-weather to turf.

Since joining Stuart Williams last autumn, the son of Iffraaj has blossomed on artificial surfaces, winning at Chelmsford (twice) and Wolverhampton. As a result his mark has soared from 75 to 88.

He competes off the same rating on turf and Williams is hopeful he will prove up to the task on ground which is likely to be quite testing.

“He’s been thriving on the all-weather during the winter,” said the trainer.

“We’ve given him a short break after his latest win at Chelmsford in March and are hopeful he can translate that good form to turf.

“It’s a tough race and I'm slightly unsure about the going. We’ll give it our best shot, though. He’s an improving horse.”

All of Mr Scaramanga’s form is on fast going so there is a concern about the ground. He ran a decent race over seven furlongs at the meeting last year. This trip would be better for him.

The second that day, Considered Opinion, trotted up at Wolverhampton on Tuesday night so the form looks good. He won’t get in the Royal Hunt Cup, but there will be other good handicaps for him this year.

He was a progressive sort last year and his run at Ascot last time suggests he’s coming back to form. This race should be run to suit, and I think he’ll like the track.

Masham Star: has been tumbling down the handicap

He has tumbled down the weights. I don’t think he’s a worse horse now than he was at this time last year, yet he’s a stone lower in the handicap. He came right back to form at Ayr last time and is 4lb well-in here so we’ve got to run, even though his best form is on slightly better ground.
