'Modernised' SP system largely based on off-course bets set for trial run

Controversial plans to change the historic starting price system in Britain so it is largely based on the off-course betting market are to be discussed in a consultation meeting on Wednesday.

The Starting Price Regulatory Commission (SPRC) is set to talk over the proposals with racecourse bookmakers and members of the off-course industry, along with other interested parties.

An SPRC paper circulated before the meeting claimed that "a tipping point has been reached" and that the on-course market "no longer produces an SP which is reflective of the overall betting market".
