It’s a big weekend for Fontwell clerk of the course Philip Hide, who takes charge of Sunday’s ITV4-televised MansionBet Southern National meeting.

And while putting the final preparations to the Sussex track for one of its flagship fixtures, former Cheltenham Festival-winning jockey Hide will no doubt take a few moments to reflect that exactly 25 years have passed since he landed the Mackeson Gold Cup – now the BetVictor Gold Cup – aboard Bradbury Star.

Hide rode more than 400 winners, many for Bradbury Star’s trainer Josh Gifford, including 1995 SunAlliance Chase hero Brief Gale before assisting Gary Moore and then setting up his own yard.
