Paul Mulrennan: back in action after a foot injury

Jockey Paul Mulrennan makes a timely comeback on Sunday after spending nearly seven weeks on the sidelines with a foot injury.

Mulrennan, who rode five winners in January before being brought to a halt in early February, returns on the second day of the British Flat turf season with two rides at Doncaster.

"I had a niggle in the bottom of my foot and needed to give it some rest," said Mulrennan. "I put it in a boot and was able to keep training every day at Jack Berry House. I've been riding out for the last three weeks and I'm looking forward to getting back."

Mulrennan, who gained back-to-back victories in the Nunthorpe on Mecca's Angel in 2015 and 2016, partners Fortamour (4.50) and Red Missile (5.25) and is quite sweet on the chances of his first ride back.

"Fortamour did well last year, winning at Ascot in September," he said. "I've ridden him a couple of times at home lately and he's in great form. He feels a lot stronger and looks a lot better in his coat than he did this time last year."

Mulrennan has established links with the likes of Michael Dods, Julie Camacho, Phillip Makin and Ben Haslam and is relishing the prospect of a full campaign after the start of last season was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

"We missed April and May last year, which are two of the most important months of the year for us, and it's great we've got the Lincoln meeting on this year," he added.

Mulrennan's main hopes for the season

Que Amoro
Michael Dods
She'll be going for the Group 1s again. That was a hell of a run when second to Battaash in the Nunthorpe and I imagine that will be the target again this year. I cantered her last week and she's absolutely bouncing. She's all speed and should be stronger for another year.

Muker
Phillip Makin
I won on him twice last year and he was placed at Royal Ascot. He had a bit of time off with a little setback and then came back and ran a great race against older horses in Ireland. He'll have learned a lot that night and hopefully he can make into a nice sprinter this year.

Euchen Glen
Jim Goldie
He was unbelievable last year, winning three times including twice at Group 3 level. Jim deserves a lot of credit for the way the horse came back from a long time off. I know there was talk of the Melbourne Cup last year and that would be something to look forward to.
