Hugo Palmer tempted by Fillies' Mile bid with Guineas hope Powerful Breeze

Classic-winning trainer Hugo Palmer is considering supplementing May Hill winner and 1,000 Guineas hope Powerful Breeze in the Group 1 bet365 Fillies’ Mile at Newmarket next month.

The two-year-old, owned and bred by Ali Ridha, is a best-priced 25-1 shot with Ladbrokes and Unibet for next year’s Qipco 1,000 Guineas after her Group 2 success at the St Leger meeting last week.

Palmer is considering the £500,000 contest over the Guineas course and distance on October 11, won by Minding, Laurens and Iridessa in recent years, but will leave the decision as to whether to pay £40,000 to supplement the exciting filly until after a key piece of work in the lead-up to the race.

The Newmarket trainer enjoyed a first British Classic with Galileo Gold in the 2,000 Guineas in 2016, while Covert Love landed the Irish Oaks the previous year and Hawksmoor and Unforgetable Filly have won the German 1,000 Guineas.

Palmer said: “It takes an awful lot of restraint not to want to run an unbeaten Group 2 winner in a Group 1. She caught me by surprise at home as she wouldn’t really have stood out in the string earlier in the year, but she did two bits of work and announced herself as quite special.

“She doesn’t have any entries for the rest of the year, so we have to make a conscious decision as to whether we spend £40,000 of the owner’s money to put her in the Fillies’ Mile. But if she works as nicely eight days out from then, as she did before the May Hill, then I’d be sure I’ll be putting her in.”

Powerful Breeze was a ready winner on debut at the July course last month before taking the step up to Group company in her stride with a length success over Prestige Stakes winner Boomer under James Doyle at Doncaster.

Palmer added: “It’s wonderful for everyone involved to have a Classic contender to look forward to over the winter and she’s the shortest-priced two-year-old we’ve had for a Classic.

“Galileo Gold was 40-1 going into the winter and Covert Love was a maiden at this stage, so we haven’t experienced this before – and it’s fun.

“All races are important and any winner is exciting, but the big winners are the days that owners remember and trainers and jockeys get remembered for.”
