There can't be many horses as aptly named as Waiting Patiently. The lesser-spotted northern star has been beset by injuries, niggles and just plain bad luck, meaning he's not raced anywhere near as often as connections would have liked.

A fit and firing Waiting Patiently is a welcome proposition, not only for Malton trainer Ruth Jefferson but also regular rider Brian Hughes. It remains something of an oddity the champion jockey has recorded just one Grade 1 success in his career when Waiting Patiently beat Cue Card in the 2018 Ascot Chase.

That is more a reflection of the dearth of genuine top-flight performers in the north than Hughes's big-race temperament, but it is still something he will be desperate to put right in Saturday's Clarence House at Ascot.
