Why 'Disgusted of Cheltenham' needs to stop moaning and see the bigger picture
In this mad year, racing has become a standard-bearer for the sporting world in demonstrating how to get the show back on the road and has been rewarded with viewing figures that suggest many people have engaged with the sport more than ever.
Why, then, do we keep beating ourselves up about the minutiae at a time when the bigger picture is what we should be looking at?
I despair every time I hear the words 'low sun'. They inevitably signal another round of huffing and puffing about obstacles being omitted because of poor visibility, supposedly to the detriment of a defeated horse that, according to their trainer, jumps like Bob Beamon on Red Bull but presumably can't run to save their life. The story invariably ends with 'Disgusted of Cheltenham' snorting about health and safety, adding we might as well call them Flat races.
