What's in a name? Quite a lot for legions of racing fans of a certain age

David Carr takes a trip down memory lane with recent York winner Gorytus

Forget asking about their fondness for golf, gardening or Genesis – here is the perfect test of whether or not someone is middle-aged. Were they left spluttering into their Campari and soda by the result of the opener at York last Sunday?

To those born since the new-fangled pound coin came into circulation, the 14-1 debut win by Gorytus prompted thoughts that Richard Fahey's horses should never be ignored on the Knavesmire and that David Nolan is a more than capable jockey.

But those of a certain age were overcome with bemused anger that Gorytus should resurface, 'just' 38 years after a meteoric rise and dramatic fall that made him one of the most talked-about horses of his generation – two brilliant wins, a 'was he doped?' flop in the Dewhurst and a career that ultimately defined anti-climax.
