We can't have Group 1s on ITV every week - but we must do better than a seller
A real stellar Saturday awaits on ITV with a day of high-class competitive racing, some riveting handicaps from a betting perspective and a proper Group 1 prize in the Sprint Cup at Haydock. It is a wonderful feast for the sport's terrestrial viewers.
Of course, not every day of live racing can be so strong – as the dismal field sizes of recent months have shown, there simply isn't the racehorse population for that – but even so last Sunday's fare fell well short of the mark expected.
Two Class 5 races and a Class 4 handicap came from Beverley, while a seller was a particularly low point from a fairly moderate card at Goodwood. It's not even as though these were competitive affairs for betting purposes either – six featured in the seller and a handicap at Beverley attracted just four.
