A Wednesday in late June, smack bang in the middle of the build-up to the Eclipse, when his achievements were overshadowed by the fact Native Trail was tackling ten furlongs for the first time in a few days. His exit was as understated as his entire career.

Nicky Henderson informed us of his retirement, saying: "He's on his way back to Martinstown to join the likes of Istabraq and Binocular. I'm sure they'll be able to tell a few stories between themselves about winning Champion Hurdles."

The first thing Istabraq probably said to Buveur D'Air when he got there was: "I've never heard of you; what have you ever done?"
