Lee Mottershead's two-day examination of the way British racing is governed contained a wealth of information and food for thought, as well as the odd pointed comment.

Racehorse Owners Association chief executive Charlie Liverton praised his former counterpart at the Racecourse Association Stephen Atkin for understanding "which hat to leave at the door when he came into a meeting".

He added: "There are, however, instances where people have forgotten they need to leave their constituency hat at the door."
