Training has become so cut-throat that I'm amazed so many are still keen on it

It was a case of a tale of two Newmarket trainers this week, one at the beginning of his career, the other at the very end.

Chris Wall, who had his first winner in 1987 and has trained a Classic winner and numerous Group 2 scorers, announced he was packing it in, saying his operation is no longer financially viable, despite winning £306,175 in prize-money during the last Flat season.

Wall, 63, had the capacity for 60 horses in his yard but just 30 in training, and said: "Our numbers have dropped off the scale and that's what really prompted the decision."
