Training horses has never been harder - but Paddy Twomey is making it look easy

Is there any other profession out there quite like training racehorses? Not only do you have to identify and recruit the best talent your owners' pockets can buy, you also need to be able to keep those horses fit and healthy and place them in the right races.

An accountant’s head is needed to keep the business afloat, while you also need to be an excellent communicator as there is more bad news than good to be delivered in this sport. In short, training horses is not only about knowing one end of a horse from the other; you need a wide-ranging skill set to make it pay.

Paddy Twomey is making it pay all right, and making it look easy at that. I paid the County Tipperary-based trainer a recent visit for a feature and one of the main things I took from my day with Twomey was that nobody handed him anything.
