The BHA's review into the alarming increase in non-runners continues. The evidence gathered in recent days underlines why the review was needed.

The latest figures show a 14 per cent year-on-year rise in non-runners. That is bad for punters, bookmakers, racecourses and jockeys. The rise cannot be due to 48-hour declarations, for they are not a new thing, while the unusually wet weather of 2016 does not provide a convincing explanation for the spike in defections.

What is clear is too many horses are being pulled out of races with ground cited as the cause, even on the all-weather.
