Lady Bracknell would know what to make of this week's news from Doncaster and Newcastle.
To lose one long-serving northern clerk of the course may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose both looks like carelessness.
Her ladyship was one of Oscar Wilde's more heartless creations and it would be wholly in character for her to lack sympathy with Arena Racing Company over the imminent departures of James Armstrong and Roderick Duncan. These are men with 34 years of experience between them who will be mighty hard to replace.
