Time for a major crackdown on interference now whip review has set the blueprint

Having wondered for quite some time what on earth it would take for horses whose riders break the rules in finishing first past the post to be disqualified or demoted, it was encouraging to see stricter whip rules proposed last week.

Few topics are more polarising and the release of an extensive report by the BHA Whip Consultation Steering Group, which consisted of a cross-section of the British industry, unsurprisingly proved divisive.

In general terms, there are those who believe conceding ground to appease a vocal minority who will never constructively engage with the sport is a risk not worth taking, while others concerned by wider public perception feel it is best for racing to manage its own image.
