I found out about the tragic death of promising event rider Tiggy Hancock from a friend who grew up with her family and four months on it is impossible to imagine the sense of loss they must still feel.

Hancock was a rising star of the eventing ranks – she won a pony bronze medal for Ireland in 2019, a year after she began eventing – but she was seriously injured during squad training in Dublin in June and was rushed to hospital, where she later died.

Her death at the age of 15 is a sad reminder of the risks equestrian athletes take every single day, which is worth keeping in mind – especially given all that has gone on this week – when we place jockeys under the microscope in the press and on social media.
