These are tough times - but many in racing are making more money than ever

A long time ago, when the economic environment was rather healthier than the one we have today, UK prime minister Harold Macmillan famously declared: "You've never had it so good."

The same is true for certain sections of British racing. Even the much-discussed equine talent drain might not be quite so black and white as we might think.

There is no doubt the sport in Australia is in a considerably healthier state. However, if you have been watching the spring carnival action in Melbourne and concluded that imported winners Zaaki, Soulcombe and My Oberon are perfect examples of horses who emigrated purely due to inadequate British prize-money, you would be wrong.
