There's nothing 'developmental' about novice chasers not having a proper race

I had to chuckle when reading Emma Lavelle's defence of British trainers regarding the two-runner race between My Drogo and Gin On Lime at Cheltenham on Friday.

"The main reason is the ground," she said. "Those kinds of races are very important because they are developmental races, but you're not going to get big fields when you've got the quality of horses rated 150-plus.

"You're expecting your novice to jump around Cheltenham first time out against a horse rated in the 150s and you haven't had a practice run either because of the ground this year.
