It is difficult to let the latest ‘improve­ment’ to our sport pass unremarked upon.

Non-triers have always been with us, but have obviously, and predictably, increased since we embraced the facility for anyone to bet that any horse will not win.

The sensible way to address the issue is through the programme book, rather than through a panel of ‘experts’. Based on results so far, the BHA is not great at finding experts; some of its previous appointments have called to mind that ‘an expert is a journeyman away from home’.
