The most beguiling juvenile filly in many a year - and at such a fitting time

Racing has an extraordinary capacity to lift the spirits in mournful times. The Queen’s death was always going to make for a sombre weekend but, had she been here to see it, she would surely have marvelled at Tahiyra’s triumph in the Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh on Sunday.

She would have known that the Aga Khan is celebrating his family’s centenary of racehorse ownership in 2022. There could be no better way to commemorate the milestone than for his studs to produce a dazzling thoroughbred in the mould of Tahiyra.

It looked for all money as though Meditate, unbeaten in four previous starts, would extend her perfect record when she forged clear approaching the final furlong, yet Tahiyra cut her down as though the favourite were treading water. She is the most beguiling two-year-old filly we have seen in many a year.
