A week next Monday, many of the sport’s constituents will gather for the annual Horserace Writers and Photographers Association awards lunch.

This popular and well-organised event offers the chance to reflect on the racing year soon to end, and celebrate and reward those who have made the biggest impression.

But when the various award winners look out from the podium upon a sea of several hundred faces hoping to hear a mercifully short but witty speech, they might notice that virtually everyone has one thing in common.
