Some merit in upgrade of Limerick chase but we hardly needed another Grade 1

It’s probably best to get the caveats out of the way first. There was a large part of me that was genuinely pleased to see Limerick’s Greenmount Park Novice Chase upgraded to Grade 1 status.

As a Munster native, it is deeply satisfying to see the locality’s long commitment to the jumps scene acknowledged with a race befitting that association, and the forward-thinking Limerick executive has been rewarded for its endeavour. Good luck to it.

Contrary to the Horse Racing Ireland press release that announced the upgrade, though, it isn’t the first Grade 1 in Munster, as Tipperary's Istabraq Hurdle enjoyed a three-year stint in the highest realm.
