Ed Walker’s column in the Weekender (August 10) brings to the fore the plight of smaller trainers as evidenced by Harry Dunlop and others quitting the game, but while what Walker says is true, he is light on reasons why this has come to pass and, more importantly, what can be done about it.

The tripartite structure of the BHA, whereby it regulates those it is accountable to, makes no sense, as self-regulation rarely works in any environment.

The BHA disappoints on so many counts so it can hardly be relied on to help smaller trainers, but nevertheless it should be taking a lead to ensure the wellbeing of the whole industry.
