Ken Livingstone was once quoted as saying that "consultation is a good thing when people agree with you, and a waste of time when people don't agree with you".

Whether the BHA will regard its consultation on the future of stewarding as a waste of time remains to be seen but it would be fair to say there are plenty of people who do not agree with the direction the governing body has been taking on honorary stewards.

In July the BHA announced it was looking to replace the existing stewarding system which combines salaried stipendiary stewards and volunteer honorary stewards, assisted by a stewards' secretary, with a new model from 2019.
