ITV's teatime treat at Sandown tests the appetite for more evening coverage

The announcement that Sandown's Brigadier Gerard Stakes card is to be given a mainstream television platform for the first time was, in itself, excellent news, and one for which ITV should be applauded.

In a wider sense, it is possible this one-off arrangement could lead to something bigger and even better.

While viewers in Ireland have become accustomed to watching evening racing on free-to-air television, the same has not been true in Britain.
