Realism is needed when reflecting on the Derby's modern day pulling power

Derby day is the greatest occasion in British Flat racing. It very much remains a magnificent racing event, just as it always has been.

There is a sense, however, that from one year to the next the Derby becomes less of a national event. That should not necessarily surprise us. Nor should we feel the need to succumb to a mass exercise of soul-searching.

Last week this column predicted it would be a difficult year for the Investec Derby. One stable was set to dominate numerically, while competition from other sporting events meant it was always likely the premier Classic's presence in the media would be squeezed.
