Horseracing was indeed "first out of the gate" as culture secretary Oliver Dowden had put it on Saturday, but that has proved to be something of a double-edged sword.

The return of racing at Newcastle on Monday is of course an enormous boost for the sport and will give hope that the remainder of the Flat season can be largely salvaged for its participants, although some of those operating at the base of its pyramid are aggrieved at the lack of opportunities for them in the opening weeks of resumption.

Racecourses will also face continued problems due to the lack of paying customers and income from hospitality and non-racing events.
