Racing offered fine examples of progress through teamwork
Weekly insight from the award-winning commentator
It was good to see the Euros put out of their misery last weekend. The one silver lining for many was that Portugal's victory was achieved without Ronaldo, hence mirroring the tournament's main theme – a success for teamwork over individuals.
Both Wales and Iceland showed how if personal ambition could be put aside for the greater good, then the whole can be greater than the sum of the parts. Contrast that with sides who had far more talent on paper but spent their time on different wavelengths, running in different directions, seemingly lacking any cohesion or overall strategy.
It seems an obvious lesson, yet you have only to look at the current political scene to appreciate how hard it seems to take on board. There is division and in-fighting right across the spectrum while Britain waits in limbo for the major issues to be tackled.
