Racing facing increased chance of government intervention in welfare debate

There was not much sign of kinder, gentler politics when Labour MP Chris Williamson challenged his Conservative counterpart Philip Davies during Monday's debate on racehorse welfare in Westminster Hall.

"Give me the whip, go stand somewhere and let me hit you with it and see if I can hurt you. He will probably find that I could hurt him," said Williamson.

His contribution was by far the most incendiary of the session as the member for Derby North claimed some elements of horseracing were "undoubtedly incredibly cruel", use of the whip was "barbaric" and that the BHA had been "singularly useless on animal welfare".
