Theresa May has not shown herself to be terribly keen on answering questions in recent days, but she had little choice but to respond at prime minister's questions last week when she was put on the spot about gaming machines.

Stephen Timms, the Labour MP for East Ham whose constituency has been one of the hotspots for local opposition to betting shops, pressed the prime minister on the delay in publication of the government's review of gaming machines and called on her to reduce stakes to £2.

Contending with a cry of "get on with it", May told Timms she was aware of the concerns about the machines – better known as FOBTs – but confirmed, as had been suspected, that the review had been delayed by the calling of a snap election.
