Sales review has opened a can of worms in urgent need of opening

On Saturday, the mammoth two-week Tattersalls October Yearling Sale ended. Turnover finished at a record high of just over £166 million. Justifiably, and not surprisingly, Tattersalls chairman Edmond Mahony was rather happy.

Nonetheless, in the Tattersalls press release quotes attributed to him there was acknowledgement this had not been a completely straightforward week.

On Tuesday, the BHA confirmed it has launched a review of the sales sector, plus the wider trading of horses, amid concerns of criminal malpractice.
