Phoenix Stakes record a testament to O'Brien's all-round mastery

For just a stride or two during the Keeneland Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh on Sunday it looked as though Beckford might deliver a first Group 1 success on the Flat for Gordon Elliott.

In the end though, the Norfolk Stakes winner Sioux Nation prevailed to provide Aidan O'Brien with his 16th winner of the event, one of only three Group 1 races for juveniles in the Irish Pattern.

Next month O'Brien will attempt to add to a tally of 11 National Stakes wins initiated by Desert King, his first Group 1 winner, in 1996. He will also bid to capture the Moyglare Stud Stakes for the eighth time.
