The signal for BBC Radio 5 Live lasted just long enough on the French side of the Channel Tunnel last Sunday to confirm that England had defeated Germany and were European champions.

Medium wave was already giving way to static when the presenter announced that the phonelines were open for callers to react to the Lionesses' historic success.

With the greatest respect to 5 Live's audience, this was one moment when I really wanted to hear from the players who had scaled one of the highest peaks in their profession.
