There has been a notable birthday in the town recently as John Lowe, widely thought to be the oldest person in Newmarket still riding out, turned 70.

The former Cock o' the North jockey rode more than 1,100 winners in a career that spanned five decades and has been a work-rider for Roger Varian for the past five years.

And rather than reach for his pipe and slippers, Lowe has vowed to ride on for at least a couple more years.
