Old-timers lit up York - and we have a wonderful handicapper to thank for that

Dante Stakes winners may come and go but it takes more than the odd Group 2 success to earn true public affection.

Hurricane Lane will have to win like Shergar at Epsom next month if he is to rival the popularity of the true stars of the meeting at York last week – at least with the locals.

It is lucky we were still behind closed doors as racegoers would have raised the roof had they been allowed in, watching Mr Lupton and then Copper Knight show they still had plenty of life in them by winning in big fields on successive days.
