When I saw footage of Noel O’Brien on television I thought to myself that he must have been promoted to a higher position within Irish racing.

To learn he died at 57 left me feeling really saddened that we will not see his semi-skipping, slightly loping stride – with binoculars hanging from his deep coat pockets! – on our racecourses again.

He really is one person who is going to be a massive loss, not only to world racing but to all of us in the Irish racing family. His ever-present smile on those red features always gave us a warm feeling because he warmed to people no matter who they were or where they came from.
