Never gonna give you up: why it's so great to see York take big-ticket bookings

With apologies to Chester, the most exciting news this week potentially came from the other side of the Pennines.

On Wednesday, York announced Rick Astley and McFly will play at its two-day music showcase weekend, beginning on July 23.

My excitement came not from a great passion for the 'Never Gonna Give You Up' singer, who has apparently reinvented himself since the 1980s and has wowed fans on YouTube and TikTok during lockdown. Nor did it arise from a burning desire to see a group that, the track tells me, were the youngest ever to have a number one debut album, beating a record set by The Beatles – who I have heard of.
