More lessons to learn than ever from early jousts - and it bodes well for Aidan

Even before the Irish Flat season kicked off at the Curragh last Saturday, I liked the way things were shaping up.

In the past I've criticised a certain haphazard feel to the early stages of the season, often a disconcerting stop-start affair punctuated by jump-related diversions: Aintree, the movable Easter feast linked by tradition to the Irish Grand National meeting at Fairyhouse, and the Punchestown festival coinciding with the first Classics of the British season.

There's no way around those obstacles. The good news is that the schedule for the 2022 Flat season allows for a more purposeful beginning.
