JP McManus's philanthropic deeds have resurfaced in the news this week.

Health, education, enterprise and sport are among the sectors in Irish society to benefit massively from his multi-million-euro charitable contributions. There's a joke in there somewhere about some of the less than prolific racehorse trainers on his roster also falling into that bracket but we would never stoop that low.

Limerick GAA has long been a prime beneficiary of McManus's altruism and his devotion to that cause, under the Sporting Limerick brand, yielded ultimate glory last month when his beloved home county were crowned All-Ireland hurling champions, ending a 45-year famine.
