A week is meant to be a long time in politics but the legislative wheels don’t always turn as swiftly as that old saying might suggest.

Not swiftly enough for Tracey Crouch’s liking, anyway. Last week the MP for Chatham and Aylesford resigned as sports minister, citing an “unjustifiable” delay to the implementation of stake reductions on fixed-odds betting terminals.

The slashing of maximum stakes from £100 to £2 will come into force in October 2019 so there is no great rush to leap out of bed and salute this new dawn of high-street bookmaking.
