IN THE 1960s when they were constructing the vast Barbican development in the City of London the builders went on strike. For two years if you please.

What is needed now is some of those old boys to volunteer for a trip to Paris to teach all the Emils, Gastons and Henris currently rebuilding Longchamp a trick or two.

They should all go home for a very long lunch of about 18 months duration because the Arc at Chantilly was a hugely jolly occasion with a real air of the great race being on holiday. Doubtless the new Longchamp will be a wonder of the world, but don’t hurry on my account mon braves – Chantilly will do for another year.
