Let's raise a glass to Albert Roux, a culinary great

This week we heard the terribly sad news that legendary chef and ­restaurateur Albert Roux OBE had passed away at the age of 85 on January 4.

Albert was most famous for opening Le Gavroche in London in 1967, with his late brother Michel Roux. Le Gavroche changed the London culinary scene and revolutionised cooking and dining, becoming the first UK restaurant to win a Michelin Star in 1974 and the first to win three stars in 1982.

Household names like Gordon Ramsay, Monica Galetti and Marco Pierre White all trained in the Roux kitchens, and the Roux Scholarship has had a massive influence on young chefs in the UK and internationally since it began in 1984.
