Leger should move with times and take step back in calendar

What a weekend of racing that was. It required a dexterity with the television remote that left my right forefinger paralysed with the same sense of exhaustion that overwhelmed so many players in humid conditions at the US Open in New York, which was played out simultaneously.

That is maybe a slight exaggeration, but you get the point. Which leads us on to another point worth considering in the wake of recent events. With Irish Champions Weekend now firmly established in the calendar, the time has surely come for Doncaster to host the St Leger meeting a week later.

This idea is advanced not because there is anything wrong with the meeting as it stands in terms of customer satisfaction. Nor is it meant to dismiss the St Leger's importance with a casual flick of the wrist. The four-day fixture has reinvented itself in many respects over the last decade but the portents for future years demand an unemotional airing.
