Ulysses confirmed his status as one of the most improved horses in training with that superlative performance in Wednesday’s Juddmonte International Stakes at York.

He has a bit to do yet, but at this point in time he is entitled to be considered the main threat to Highland Reel’s hard-earned label as the best middle-distance colt in this part of the world. Still, there is no denying they are not exactly a vintage bunch.

Highland Reel, a six-time Group 1 winner who has been campaigned with real ingenuity by Aidan O'Brien, was well held behind Ulysses in the King George, when the ground was slower than ideal for him.
