Pardon me for risking an argument in the season of peace and goodwill but here is a bold statement: December 26 is the best racing day of the year.

If you were allowed to watch the action on only one day out of the 365, you ought to choose Boxing Day, or St Stephen’s Day if you prefer.

That is partly down to sheer quality; there is no more consistently high-class jump race run anywhere in the world than the King George VI Chase.
